Are you ready?
GeriatricPain.org was designed to provide resources and tools to assist in your completion of the MDS 3.0 pain measures. The resources on GeriatricPain.org have all been updated to reflect the MDS3.0 requirements.
As you may be aware, all nursing homes will need to transition to the Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0 beginning in October 2010.
MDS History
The Minimum Data Set (MDS) is part of a clinical assessment process that is federally mandated for all residents in Medicare or Medicaid certified nursing homes (NH). The entire process, the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI), provides a comprehensive assessment of the functional ability for each NH resident and assists NH staff in identifying existing or potential health problems. Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPs) are part of this process and provide the foundation for a resident's individual care plan.
MDS assessments are required for residents at admission to the NH and periodically thereafter. MDS information is transmitted electronically by NH’s to the MDS database in their state. MDS information from state databases is then gathered in a national MDS database at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).
Information included on the MDS determines the Resource Utilization Group (RUG) category, which ultimately determines the per diem rate paid to the NH for a resident covered under Medicare Part A. The MDS also provides data for reports on a NH’s quality indicators and quality measures.
Transition to MDS 3.0
Many have raised questions and expressed concerns about the current MDS version (2.0), related to its reliability and relevance because it fails to include information gathered via direct resident interview. In addition, many users and government agencies have expressed concerns about MDS 2.0 data quality and validity. MDS 3.0 has been designed to include NH residents directly in the assessment process which should improve the accuracy and usefulness of the MDS data.
